The GROW Milwaukee 2014 Summer of Solutions program will largely focus on revitalizing a garden space in the Washington Park neighborhood of Milwaukee.   We prioritize working with youth directly from the local community, however others are welcome to apply!  We’re looking for young people who are open to trying new things and would enjoy spending their summer outdoors, with interests in food, gardening, art, music or biking.

Desired Qualities:

  • From Washington Park neighborhood or surrounding Milwaukee area

  • Willingness to learn

  • Experience gardening/farming; construction

  • Comfortable working with children

  • Ability to work as a part of a team

  • Verbal communication skills

Program Dates

  • Start: June 17th, 2014

  • End: August 15th, 2014

Funding Availability and Time Commitments

We are seeking two full-time participants, as well as numerous part-time participants

  • Full-time participants can expect to work approximately 25-30 hours per week during the program dates.  Compensation will be $100/week.

  • Part-time participant involvement is volunteer-based and depends on individual availability.  Scheduling is flexible, but will not exceed 20 hours per week.

Learning outcomes and skills participants can expect to gain

After participating in the GROW Milwaukee Summer of Solutions program, participants will;

  • Have experience gardening and creating compost

  • Develop skills in community organizing and outreach

  • Gain experience leading youth in a summer garden camp

  • Plan and lead community gardening and wellness workshops

  • Create and run a pop-up farm stand

  • Meet new people and have fun!


Participants accepted to the GROW Milwaukee Summer of Solutions program will have the opportunity to participate in developing and implementing the following projects:

  • Community Garden

    • Participants will work with the GROW Milwaukee team and local volunteers to revitalize the vacant lot located at 35th and Galena in Washington Park, to create a thriving garden.  Raised bed garden plots will be available to community members to tend throughout the season.  The garden space will also be used as community gathering space for special events and celebrations!

  • Youth Garden Summer Camp

    • A 7-week summer camp will be held in the garden for children ages 5-13.  Participants will help develop and lead activities involving science, gardening, health, nutrition, sustainability and art.

  • Pop-up Farm Stand

    • Participants will gain experience growing, harvesting and marketing vegetables grown in the garden.  The farm stand will be organized and run by participants at different locations throughout Washington Park.

  • Community Workshops

    • Workshops will be organized for community members on a variety of gardening, food preservation, and/or health topics.  Participants will help plan and lead workshops throughout the summer.
